My team has outgrown our current chat setup, and now we’re stuck comparing Slack vs Teams vs Discord for work. We need something reliable for messaging, file sharing, calls, and keeping projects organized, but everyone has a different opinion based on cost, features, and ease of use. I need help figuring out which platform actually works best for business communication and collaboration before we make the wrong switch.
Pick based on your stack and your team size.
Slack:
Best chat UX. Fast search. Strong app ecosystem. Great for cross-company work.
Weak spot is price. Free tier loses older messages and limits history. Huddles are fine, but full meeting flow feels lighter than Teams.
Best fit if your team lives in Google Workspace, Jira, GitHub, Notion.
Teams:
Best if you already pay for Microsoft 365. Chat, meetings, calendars, files, and Office docs sit in one place. Admin controls are strong. Compliance is strong too.
Weak spot is clutter. UX feels heavier. Search is hit or miss. Too many places for files and threads confuses ppl.
Best fit for companies deep in Outlook, Excel, SharePoint, Entra ID.
Discord:
Best voice quality for many teams. Cheap. Easy informal chat. Good for communities and async convo.
Weak spot is work structure. File handling, compliance, guest access, retention, eDiscovery, and formal project org are weaker. It feels less built for corp work, becuase it is.
Best fit for startups, gaming, creator teams, internal communities.
My blunt take:
If you need serious work ops, pick Slack or Teams.
If you need enterprise controls and already use Microsoft, pick Teams.
If you want the cleanest chat experience and best integrations, pick Slack.
If your team treats work like a community server and doesn’t need strict admin stuff, Discord works.

For most teams outgrowing a random chat setup, Slack is the safest pick. Teams wins on value if M365 is already paid for. Discord is the outlier. Fun, cheap, but weaker for formal work.
I mostly agree with @waldgeist, but I’d push back on Discord a bit harder for actual work.
Discord is great right up until someone asks “where’s that file,” “who has access,” or “can we pull records from 6 months ago?” Then it gets messy fast. It’s awesome for vibe, not amazing for process. If your team is more than just a small, loose startup, I probly wouldn’t build the company on it.
My shortcut:
- Already on Microsoft 365 and actually use Outlook/OneDrive/Office every day: Teams
- Mixed tools, lots of integrations, people care about chat UX: Slack
- Tiny team, low compliance needs, mostly voice/chat, very casual culture: Discord
One thing people underrate is user behavior. The “best” platform on paper loses if your team hates opening it. Teams can do a lot, but some teams just never use channels properly and everything turns into meetings. Slack tends to get adopted faster because it feels lighter.
If projects organization is a top requirement, none of these are really project management tools. They are communication hubs. You’ll still want Jira, Asana, ClickUp, Notion, whatever. Don’t expect the chat app to magically fix messy workflows. Seen that movie before, ends badly lol.
