Is anyone else having issues with the Wordle New York Times app not loading or syncing correctly between devices? I’m confused about whether I should be using the website or the app, and my streaks and stats seem off. I’d really appreciate clear advice on how the official NYT Wordle app is supposed to work and how to fix these problems.
Yeah, this has been a mess for a lot of ppl lately.
A few things to check and do:
-
Pick one “main” platform
If you want streaks to stay accurate, use either- The NYT Games app on all devices
or - The Wordle page on the NYT site in a browser on all devices
Mixing app on one device and browser on another often desyncs stats.
- The NYT Games app on all devices
-
Make sure you are logged into the same NYT account
- On phone app, open NYT Games, tap your profile icon, confirm email
- On web, go to nytimes.com, top right, make sure it is the same account
If one device is “Guest” and the other is logged in, stats will not match.
-
Sync steps that usually fix it
Do this on the device with the “correct” stats first.- Confirm you are logged in on that device
- Force close the app, reopen, play one more puzzle, then fully close again
- On the second device, log out of your NYT account in the app or browser
- Close it, reopen, log back in with the same account
- Wait 20–30 seconds on the stats screen, then refresh or restart once
-
If you started on the old, pre‑NYT Wordle site
Streaks from the original PowerLanguage site do not auto carry to NYT.
A lot of users saw their streak “restart” when NYT took over. That is normal behavior for their system, not a bug. -
App not loading properly
- iOS: Settings > General > iPhone Storage > NYT Games > Offload App, then reinstall
- Android: Settings > Apps > NYT Games > Storage > Clear cache (not data first), if still broken, then Clear data and log in again
- Make sure date and time are set to automatic. Wrong device time often breaks Wordle’s “new puzzle” logic.
-
Known weirdness
- If you solve on one device while the other is open, stats might not update until you hard close and reopen.
- If your network is flaky when you finish a puzzle, it sometimes fails to send the result to the server, so that day never counts in the streak.
-
If your streak looks totally wrong
- Screenshot stats on both devices
- Go to NYT Games help page > “Contact us” and send both screenshots and what devices you use
They have manually fixed streaks for some users when there is clear evidence.
If you want the lowest headache setup, use the NYT Games app on phone and tablet, logged into the same account, and avoid the browser version. That tends to sync more reliably than mixing app + site.
Yeah, this whole NYT / Wordle ecosystem is kind of a frankenstein right now.
I mostly agree with what @cacadordeestrelas said about picking one “main” platform, but I’d actually argue the browser version is the most stable long‑term if you hop between devices a lot. The app is nice, but every app update is another chance for weird cache / storage issues. The website tends to just…work, as long as you’re logged into the same account.
A few extra angles that might help that weren’t covered:
-
Check if you’re accidentally using different “entry points”
- NYT main news app
- NYT Games app
- Web at nytimes.com/games
These sometimes behave like separate worlds. I’ve seen stats tied to Games but not show up properly in the main NYT app.
-
Safari / Chrome private mode will kill your sync
If one of your devices is using an incognito/private tab, Wordle treats that like a fresh guest profile. That can make streaks look like they reset or split. -
Third‑party blockers
Content blockers, VPNs, or aggressive privacy settings can prevent the stats call from reaching NYT’s servers when you finish a puzzle.- Try disabling adblock / content blocker just for the NYT site
- Or test in a browser with no extensions to see if the streak behaves
-
“Ghost” local data problem
Sometimes the device that has the wrong streak is actually the one overwriting the correct one. If you really want to “reset” one device so it stops corrupting things:- Log out on that device
- Clear only the browser cookies for nytimes.com or clear app data
- Log back in and let it pull stats fresh from the server, don’t open the puzzle first
-
Morning vs night desync
If you’re in a timezone near the NYT reset cutoff, and you sometimes play right before and right after midnight, it can look like you “missed” a day when the server disagrees with your local clock. In that case, I’d avoid cutting it so close to the reset time or at least always play on the same device around midnight. -
How to pick website vs app, practically
- If you only ever play on your phone or tablet: app is fine, just keep it updated and stay logged in.
- If you bounce between work PC, laptop, phone: I’d lean hard toward browser only, logged into NYT everywhere. Less chance of the app and browser “arguing” over your latest stats.
At this point, if your streak is already messed up, I’d decide which numbers you “accept” as canon, clean up the other devices so they pull from that, then stick to one entry path. Trying to keep app + site + guest mode all happy at once is basically begging Wordle to eat your stats again.
