I accidentally permanently deleted several important files and can’t find them in the Recycle Bin. I need help recovering the deleted files without overwriting or damaging the data.
Recovery is possible, but the odds drop every time the affected drive is used. Stop downloading files, installing programs, or saving anything to that drive. If it is your Windows system drive, shut the computer down and use another computer if possible. Deleted data often remains until new data overwrites it.
First check places outside the Recycle Bin: OneDrive, Google Drive, Dropbox, Windows File History, backup software, and previous versions of the folder. Permanently deleting a local copy does not always remove cloud copies or older snapshots.
If no backup exists, connect the drive to another computer or boot from a separate recovery environment. Run a deep scan with recovery software such as Disk Drill data recovery software. Install the program on a different drive, and save recovered files to a different drive as well. Recovering them back onto the source disk can overwrite other files that are still recoverable.
The type of storage matters. Recovery from a traditional hard drive can work well if the sectors have not been reused. SSD recovery is less predictable because TRIM may clear deleted blocks automatically, sometimes very quickly. If the files are irreplaceable, or the drive is making noises, disconnect it and contact a professional recovery lab instead of repeatedly scanning it. No recovery program can guarantee intact files, so preview the results before paying or restoring a large batch.
Make a sector-by-sector image of the affected drive before running repair tools or repeated recovery scans. Work from that image if the software supports it. This preserves the drive’s current state and gives you another attempt if a scan goes wrong.
Avoid CHKDSK, Windows “repair” prompts, defragmenting, or restoring files to their original folder. Those operations can change filesystem data and make recovery harder. @sam_ux is right about using a separate destination drive, but I’d treat previews cautiously too. A listed filename does not mean the contents are intact, so open a few recovered documents, photos, or videos before processing everything.
Disk Drill can scan an image or the original disk, but no software will restore data that TRIM or later writes have already cleared. If the missing files were on an SSD and the computer stayed running afterward, check backups and cloud version history first because that may be the only clean copy left.
If the files were on your Windows system drive, shut the computer down and connect that drive to another PC for recovery. Installing Disk Drill or any other recovery program onto the affected drive can overwrite the exact space you are trying to recover.
Before doing a full scan, separate the files into replaceable and irreplaceable groups. Downloads may be available again, email attachments may still be in sent messages, and working documents may have autosaved copies inside the program that created them. That lets you focus recovery attempts on photos, original projects, and anything else with no second source.
Expect recovered results to be messy. Deep scans often find the contents without the original filenames or folder structure, so restore a small sample to another drive and verify that the files actually open. If the drive is clicking, disappearing, or reporting the wrong capacity, stop using software entirely. At that point repeated scans can make a hardware problem worse, and a recovery lab is the safer option.
If the drive was encrypted with BitLocker or any full disk encryption, half the advice above changes. Recovery tools can still carve out the raw sectors, but what they pull back is scrambled unless the volume is unlocked with the right key first. So before you image anything or run a deep scan, make sure you can actually mount the drive normally. Scanning a locked encrypted volume just wastes time and drive activity.
I mostly agree with @wolf4218 about imaging first, but for a lot of people that step never happens because they don’t have a spare drive big enough sitting around. If that’s you, don’t let the missing image become an excuse to keep poking at the disk. A cheaper middle ground is to grab any external drive you can, even a small one, and at least save the recovered files there instead of the source. The imaging is ideal, not mandatory, and telling a panicking person to buy a second matching drive sometimes stalls them out completely.
Disk Drill is a reasonable first pass and its free scan will show you what’s findable before you commit to anything, which is the honest way to use it. Just don’t expect the preview to reflect final quality, especially for videos and large project files that get carved in fragments. And the thing everyone forgets: recently deleted files often have a plain undelete option that keeps the original name and folder, which is worlds better than a deep scan dumping thousands of nameless files on you. Try the quick undelete before the deep carve, not after.
